KVM over IP – the downsides of misuse! The KVM (Keyboard, Video and Mouse) management and switching market is prone to fads, just like every other market. One of the current “must haves” is KVM over IP - a method of remotely accessing and controlling servers and other devices from anywhere in the world – the service engineer’s dream product. If used correctly – for damage limitation, remote support, out of hours service and support work - it’s a marvellous thing; a method of accessing anything from anywhere regardless of its platform or OS. Like most good things, however, KVM over IP is commonly used incorrectly. The fact that it is IP addressable means that you can use your own network for KVM signal transport. The trouble is that video eats bandwidth, which is why video is composed separately at both client and server. Networks are not designed to carry video; in fact they are specifically designed to avoid having to carry video by using the graphics capability of workstations. Think about it! A KVM system is supposed to support your network whereas KVM over IP, used incorrectly, does exactly the opposite – it imposes additional stress, and because we are dealing with video, a busy, bursty network is especially unsuitable. When misused it’s a self destructive technology. Some clever folks run separate Networks for their KVM systems. That’s even more daft - bandwidth creation and use for the sake of it. The correct solution is to run a true Out of Band KVM system, which uses no Network bandwidth at all, and is a real support weapon – it works even if the network is down. Yes they do exist, and bloody good they are too. The IP part can then be added in its correct context – for remote emergency access or monitoring.
The UltraLink range of KVM switches allows you to access your computers from anywhere in the world. The UltraLink acts as a gateway between an existing KVM switch and your publicly available network, providing a link between the two. An IP address can then be assigned to the UltraLink to allow remote access to your servers and clients from any workstation. You can access your server as if you were standing in front of it, whether from home, work or halfway around the world. The unit is easy to install and configure with excellent security features to prevent unauthorized access. The UltraLink has a sophisticated console allowing you to work on any servers or clients within a resizable window - you can monitor servers and statistics while you work on other tasks on your workstation. These resizable windows also control the amount of data passed between your workstation and the UltraLink, allowing you to conduct fast updates over slow links because less data is transferred. The UltraLink is a fully-embedded product requiring no hard disk or complicated operating system, ensuring the highest reliability and availability. Support for resolutions up to 1280x1024 is provided, with access not only to PC clients and servers but also Sun and other high-resolution computers. For maximum flexibility, you can access the UltraLink through its dedicated serial port for dial-up access over modem. A local KVM port is also featured for access directly at the unit.
