What is a KVM Extender?

Professional catX KVM Extenders allow a Keyboard, Video monitor, Mouse (including such devices as touchpad or trackball) and other interfaces such as touch-screen, serial and USB ports to be located up to 400m (1300 ft.) from the source PC or KVM switch.
A professional type of KVM Extender should be used where access to the PC is required usually rather than occasionally and where absolute signal integrity and video quality are important. These units are mains-powered at each end and so do not rely upon the USB or PS/2 ports to supply operating power. On some units, emulation is provided so the connected Computer "stays alive" i.e. does not drop its keyboard and mouse session even if the remote peripherals are not connected or are powered down.
Security features such as being able to disable the remote Keyboard and Mouse are available. Local access is also an option – in this case screens can be viewed both at the local (computer) and remote (User) ends of a link at the same time.
Skew compensation is available so that cable types with different pair-twist rates (cat 6 and cat7 cable) can be used as a transmission medium as well as cat 5 and cat5E. Rose Electronics Ltd's range of KVM extension products include the CrystalView range from Rose Electronics in Houston, and the European engineered ExiVision range for super high resolution - up to 2560 x 2048, dual, triple and quad video applications. Our KVM, KVMA, KVM-USB and KVM+serial ranges can use a variety of extension mediums such as cat5, cat5e, cat 6 or cat7 UTP cable structures, singlemode or multimode optical fiber (fibre) and even the internet with the digital “over IP” Ultralink and ExiVision IP products. All of our KVM extension products can be used directly with CPUs (either servers or workstations) or for remote console access to KVM switches.
